Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
parabh samrath sarab sukh daanaa.
God is the almighty Giver of all peace and joy.
simra-o naam hohu miharvaanaa.
Be merciful to me, that I may meditate in remembrance on Your Name.
har daataa jee-a jant bhaykhaaree jan baaNchhai jaachangnaa. ||1||
The Lord is the Great Giver; all beings and creatures are beggars; His humble servants yearn to beg from Him. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One is the all-powerful Giver of every peace and joy.
Be kind to me, so I can remember Your Naam.
The One is the Great Giver, and every living thing asks; those who love You long to ask from You.
Everyone alive is asking for something; you get to choose what you ask for.
One posture runs through the whole hymn: open hands. All beings are 'beggars' in the sense that all life leans on something larger; the servant simply asks for the Giver rather than the gifts. Asking with open hands is glad, and carries no shame.
A Question to Sit With
When you feel that quiet wanting inside, what is it reaching for?
