Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 139
Verse 12 of 16

Before Anything Began

kayt-rhi-aa din gupat kahaa-i-aa.
For so many days, You remained invisible.
kayt-rhi-aa din sunn samaa-i-aa.
For so many days, You were absorbed in silent absorption.
kayt-rhi-aa din DhunDhookaaraa aapay kartaa pargatrhaa. ||12||
For so many days, there was only pitch darkness, and then the Creator revealed Himself. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

For ages upon ages, You stayed unseen.

For ages, You rested in a deep and total silence.

For ages there was only deep darkness, and then the Maker came into view.

Every bright thing was once a quiet, waiting darkness.
The deeper layer

Wonder at how everything began: first the 'sunn' (a deep, silent stillness) before creation, then the Creator becoming 'pargatrhaa' (revealed).

A Question to Sit With

What is something wonderful that grew out of a long, quiet wait?
