Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 139
Verse 3 of 16

You Hold the Ledger

oohaa hukam tumaaraa sunee-ai.
In the world hereafter, the Hukam of Your Command is heard.
eehaa har jas tayraa bhanee-ai.
In this world, I chant Your Praises, Lord.
aapay laykh alaykhai aapay tum si-o naahee kichh jhaarhaa. ||3||
You Yourself write the account, and You Yourself erase it; no one can argue with You. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Beyond this life, Your Command is what is heard.

Right here, in this life, I get to sing what is good about You.

You write the record, and You can wipe the slate clean; no one can argue with You.

The One keeping the record is also the One glad to wipe it clean.
The deeper layer

The One who writes the record can also wipe it clean. 'Aapay laykh alaykhai aapay': You write the account and You erase it. Beneath it runs 'suneeai': Your Command is heard.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to know your slate could always be wiped clean?
