Remember, and Let the Rest Fall Away

ਏ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਚੇਤਿ ਤੂ ਮਨਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

O my mind, remember the Dear Lord, and abandon the corruption of your mind.

gur kai sabad Dhi-aa-ay too sach lagee pi-aar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Meditate on the Word of the Guru's Shabad; focus lovingly on the Truth. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, remember the dear One, and let go of what pulls you off-center.

Meditate on the Guru's Word, and let your love rest on the Truth.

Remembering what you love loosens the pull of what pulls you off-center.
The deeper layer

Remember the dear One, and the things pulling you off course will fall away.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Vikaar usually means bad habits. Here it means anything that pulls the heart off-center. The way to lose them is not scrubbing hard. It is chayt, remembering, and dhi-aa-ay, keeping your mind on the Word.

As your attention fills up with good things, the rest gets crowded out. Think of a garden. The more flowers you plant, the less room the weeds have to grow.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing, when you focus on it, makes lesser things fall away?
