Verse 3 of 5

Forgetting Leaves the Heart Restless

ਐਥੈ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਹਥੁ ਕਿਥਾਊ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
aithai naavhu bhuli-aa fir hath kithaa-oo na paa-ay.
One who forgets the Name in this world, shall not find any place of rest anywhere else.
ਜੋਨੀ ਸਭਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਨਿ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
jonee sabh bhavaa-ee-an bistaa maahi samaa-ay. ||2||
He shall wander in all sorts of reincarnations, and rot away in manure. ||2||

In plain words

When I let the Naam slip out of mind, a restlessness follows me around.

Nothing quite settles; I keep looking for a resting place and not finding one.

I go round and round, and end up stuck in the mud.

Forgetting what matters leaves you restless; remembering lets you rest.
The deeper layer

When we forget the Name, the heart cannot find rest anywhere.

The verse uses strong pictures for this. It speaks of wandering through jonee, life after life, and ending up stuck in the dirt. What the pictures point to is a feeling we all know: restlessness. Aithai naavhu bhuli-aa means forgetting the Name here, in this life.

Think of a day when you forgot something important. It nags at you, and nothing feels right until you remember. Forgetting the Name is like that, only deeper. The cure, all through this shabad, is simple: remember.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your heart find rest when it feels restless?
