The Same One Who Made It All Gives Grace

ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਭ ਸਾਜੀਅਨੁ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

He Himself fashioned the entire universe; He Himself bestows His Glance of Grace.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਜੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੈ ਦੇਇ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak naam vadi-aa-ee-aa jai bhaavai tai day-ay. ||4||2||
O Nanak, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is glorious and great; as He pleases, He bestows His Blessings. ||4||2||

In plain words

The One who shaped the entire universe also turns a kind glance toward me.

Nanak says: the Naam is the greatest glory, and the One gives it to whoever the One wishes.

It is given freely, as love decides, never as a prize I had to win.

The One vast enough to make everything still bends near with kindness.
The deeper layer

The One who made the whole world also looks at each of us with kindness.

Sarisat means all of creation. The One shaped it. The same One gives nadar, a glance of grace. Jai bhaavai tai day-ay means the One gives as love wishes. It is free, never a prize we win.

Think of a huge orchestra, with hundreds of players. Then the conductor turns and smiles right at you. That is nadar. At the start of Japji Sahib, Guru Nanak calls this gurprasaad, grace freely given. The Name is that grace, come close.

A Question to Sit With

Where have you felt a kind glance you did not have to earn?
