Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 140
Verse 12 of 21

Near the Whole World, Standing Firm

ਨਿਹਕੰਟਕੁ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
nihkantak nihkayval kahee-ai.
He is said to be free of anguish, and absolutely immaculate.
ਧਨੰਜੈ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਹੈ ਮਹੀਐ ॥
Dhananjai jal thal hai mahee-ai.
The Lord of prosperity, pervading the water, the land and the sky.
ਮਿਰਤ ਲੋਕ ਪਇਆਲ ਸਮੀਪਤ ਅਸਥਿਰ ਥਾਨੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਹੈ ਅਭਗਾ ॥੧੨॥
mirat lok pa-i-aal sameepat asthir thaan jis hai abhgaa. ||12||
He is near this world and the nether regions of the underworld; His Place is permanent, ever-stable and imperishable. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Free of all trouble, perfectly pure, filling the water and the land and the sky.

Near to this world and to every hidden depth, close to all of it.

And this One's home never shakes, never breaks, never moves.

The One is close to everything, and its ground never shakes.
The deeper layer

The One is near to everything, and the One's home never shakes.

Jal thal hai mahee-ai: the One fills the water, the land and the sky. Sameepat means near. Asthir thaan jis hai abhgaa: a place that stays put and never breaks. Nearness and steadiness together are the calm of Maaroo, a raag of storms.

A Question to Sit With

What is something in your life that feels steady and safe?
