Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 140
Verse 16 of 21

One Tongue, Endless Wonder

ayk jeeh gun kavan bakhaanai.
Which of Your Glorious Virtues can I chant with my one tongue?
sahas fanee saykh ant na jaanai.
Even the thousand-headed serpent does not know Your limit.
navtan naam japai din raatee ik gun naahee parabh kahi sangaa. ||16||
One may chant new names for You day and night, but even so, O God, no one can describe even one of Your Glorious Virtues. ||16||

In plain words

With just one tongue, how could I ever tell all the good there is here?

Even the thousand-tongued serpent of the old stories cannot reach the end of it.

You could sing fresh names day and night and still not finish praising even one small piece of this wonder.

However much you praise the wonder, there is always more.
The deeper layer

Praise can never catch up with the One.

Ayk jeeh, one tongue: how could it tell every virtue? Sahas fanee saykh is Shesha, the thousand-headed serpent of the old stories, and even Shesha cannot find the end. Navtan naam: new names sung day and night still fall short. Next comes the turn from the made names to the True Name.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so wonderful you could never finish describing it?
