Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 140
Verse 17 of 21

Reaching for the Shelter of the World's Parent

ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਪਿਤ ਸਰਣਾਇਆ ॥
ot gahee jagat pit sarnaa-i-aa.
I have grasped the Support, and entered the Sanctuary of the Lord, the Father of the world.
ਭੈ ਭਇਆਨਕ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਦੁਤਰ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
bhai bha-i-aanak jamdoot dutar hai maa-i-aa.
The Messenger of Death is terrifying and horrendous, and sea of Maya is impassable.
hohu kirpaal ichhaa kar raakho saaDh santan kai sang sangaa. ||17||
Please be merciful, Lord, and save me, if it is Your Will; please lead me to join with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||17||

In plain words

I have taken hold of the One who is like a parent to the whole world, and come inside that shelter.

The pull of getting and grabbing can feel like a wide sea that is hard to cross.

So please, in your kindness, keep me safe, and keep me in the Sangat, with the saints.

When life feels hard to cross, reaching for the One's shelter and the Sangat is the brave move.
The deeper layer

When life feels hard to cross, we can hold on to the One, who is like a parent to the whole world.

Ot gahee means I have taken hold of a support. Jagat pit means the Father of the world. The verse admits that some things feel scary. It names jamdoot, the messenger of death in the old stories, and maa-i-aa, the pull of getting and grabbing, which is dutar, hard to cross. The answer to both is shelter and the Sangat.

The prayer says, hohu kirpaal: be kind, and keep me safe. Then it asks for saadh santan kai sang, the Sangat of the saints. Think of a small child in a thunderstorm, holding a parent's hand. The storm is still loud, but the child feels safe.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel safe when things feel like too much?
