Verse 20 of 21

The Made Names and the True Name

kirtam naam kathay tayray jihbaa.
With my tongue I chant the Names given to You.
sat naam tayraa paraa poorbalaa.
'Sat Naam' is Your perfect, primal Name.
kaho naanak bhagat pa-ay sarnaa-ee dayh daras man rang lagaa. ||20||
Says Nanak, Your devotees have entered Your Sanctuary. Please bestow the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan; their minds are filled with love for You. ||20||

In plain words

All the names my tongue can say are names that people made, out of love, to point at You.

But your True Name, Sat Naam, was there before all of them, before anything began.

Nanak says, your loving ones have come to your shelter; let us see you, our hearts already coloured with love.

Every loving name for the One is welcome; behind them all is the True Name that was always there.
The deeper layer

Every name we sing is a name people made; the True Name was there before them all.

Kirtam naam means the made names, every name sung through this whole Solhe. Sat naam paraa poorbalaa means the True Name, older than all of them. Every loving name is honored, and all of them rest beneath the One they point to, Ik Onkar.

A Question to Sit With

What are some different names people use for the same wonder?
