The Friend of Those With No One

ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਅਨਾਥਹ ਨਾਥੇ ॥
bhagat vachhal anaathah naathay.
You are the Lover of Your devotees, the Master of the masterless.
ਗੋਪੀ ਨਾਥੁ ਸਗਲ ਹੈ ਸਾਥੇ ॥
gopee naath sagal hai saathay.
The Lord and Master of the milk-maids, You are the companion of all.
ਬਾਸੁਦੇਵ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦਾਤੇ ਬਰਨਿ ਨ ਸਾਕਉ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਗਾ ॥੫॥
baasudayv niranjan daatay baran na saaka-o gun angaa. ||5||
O Lord, Immacuate Great Giver, I cannot describe even an iota of Your Glorious Virtues. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One who loves those who love back, and who becomes the family of anyone who feels they have no one at all.

The companion of everyone, spotless and free, the great Giver.

And I could not describe even a tiny corner of all that goodness.

No one is left alone; the One becomes family to whoever has none.
The deeper layer

The One becomes family to anyone who has no one.

Anaathah naathay means the master of those who have no master: the One stands with the vulnerable. Gopee naath, the milkmaids' companion, sagal hai saathay, is the companion of all. Then praise runs out of words: baran na saaka-o, I cannot describe it.

A Question to Sit With

Who makes you feel like you are never alone?
