Purify what is impure, and let the Lord's Presence be your religious tradition. Let your total awareness be the turban on your head. ||12||

In plain words

Let good deeds be the body you show the world, and steady trust your close companion.

Delight in the love and the wonder of the One.

Make what is unclean clean, live as if the One were always present, and let full awareness be the turban you wear with dignity.

Wear your awareness the way you would wear something you are proud of.
The deeper layer

Let your whole life be your faith: good deeds as your body, trust as your partner, awareness as your turban.

The words in this verse come from the Muslim faith of the day, and each one is turned inward, toward the heart. Kaa-i-aa kirdaar means let good deeds be your body. A-urat yakeenaa means let faith be your bride, your closest companion. Rang tamaasay means enjoying the love and wonder of the One. Naapaak paak kar means make the unclean clean. Hadoor hadeesaa means let living in the One's presence be your tradition.

Last comes saabat soorat dastaar siraa. A dastaar is a turban, worn with care and dignity. The verse says: let full, unbroken awareness be the turban on your head. Think of putting on a team jersey. You do not just wear it; you play like it.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you would love to carry yourself with more dignity in?
