The Four Stages of the Path

saraa saree-at lay kammaavahu.
Let your practice be to live the spiritual life.
tareekat tarak khoj tolaavahu.
Let your spiritual cleansing be to renounce the world and seek God.
maarfat man maarahu abdaalaa milhu hakeekat jit fir na maraa. ||3||
Let control of the mind be your spiritual wisdom, O holy man; meeting with God, you shall never die again. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Let living a good, honest life be the law you keep.

Let letting go of the world and searching for the One be how you keep your heart clean.

Let quieting the restless mind be your wisdom, holy one; meet the One, and you will never die again.

Every path worth walking is walked on the inside first.
The deeper layer

Four stages of the Sufi path, each turned into an inner practice: shariat (the law, honest living), tariqat (the way, cleansing), marfat (wisdom, a quiet mind), haqiqat (Reality, meeting the One). 'Jit fir na maraa': where there is no more dying.

A Question to Sit With

What is one honest, ordinary habit that keeps your heart clean?
