Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 143
Verse 10 of 15

Sheltered Forever

jaa kai mastak Dhur likh paa-i-aa.
One who has such pre-ordained destiny inscribed upon his forehead,
tis hee purakh na vi-aapai maa-i-aa.
that person is not afflicted by Maya.
naanak daas sadaa sarnaa-ee doosar lavai na laavnaa. ||10||
Slave Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary forever; there is no other equal to You. ||10||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The one whose heart carries a quiet blessing from the start

is not swept away by the pull of chasing after things.

Nanak, Your servant, says: I seek Your shelter, always; there is nothing anywhere that compares to You.

The safest place there is stays open to you, always.
The deeper layer

'Dhur likh paa-i-aa' (a blessing written from the start) is rendered as grace, not grim fate; such a one is not swept away by Maya. The verse rests in taking sanctuary, 'doosar lavai na laavnaa' (nothing compares).

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go, inside or out, when you need shelter?
