Verse 2 of 69
Without the Name, the Wandering; With Truth, the Settling
mehlaa 4.
Fourth Mehl:
naam vihoonay bharmaseh aavahi jaaveh neet.
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, they wander around, continually coming and going in reincarnation.
ik baaNDhay ik dheeli-aa ik sukhee-ay har pareet.
Some are in bondage, and some are set free; some are happy in the Love of the Lord.
naanak sachaa man lai sach karnee sach reet. ||2||
O Nanak, believe in the True Lord, and practice Truth, through the lifestyle of Truth. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Without keeping the One in mind, a person drifts, coming and going, never quite arriving anywhere.
Some feel tied down, some feel free, and some rest happy in that steady Love.
Nanak says: believe in the True One, make Truth your work and your way of life, and the drifting quiets down.
The Name is the anchor that turns endless drifting into a place to stand.
A shalok of the Fourth Mehl. Naam here is the living presence of the One held in awareness; without it the mind wanders restlessly. The remedy is to believe in Truth and to live it too, so that Truth becomes the way you move through the day.
A Question to Sit With
What is one small way you could live more truthfully today?
