Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

From the Guru I received something sharp and clear, like a bright sword made of understanding.

With it I cut through the tall walls of doubt, of feeling separate, of grasping and pride.

Now the Naam lives in my mind, and turning the Guru's Word over and over, the True One feels close and dear.

Understanding is a blade that cuts down the inner walls, not other people.
The deeper layer

The first Pauree (||1||) of the Vaar, from Guru Amar Das. Spiritual wisdom is imagined as a sword, not to harm anyone, but to cut down the inner fortress that keeps us feeling divided from the One and from each other. The walls named are duality, doubt, attachment, greed and egotism, the whole architecture of separation.

A Question to Sit With

What is one wall inside you that you would like understanding to help take down?
