Contentment as the True Temple

salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
jogee hovaa jag bhavaa ghar ghar bheekhi-aa lay-o.
If I were to become a Yogi, and wander around the world, begging from door to door,
dargeh laykhaa mangee-ai kis kis utar day-o.
then, when I am summoned to the Court of the Lord, what answer could I give?
bhikhi-aa naam santokh marhee sadaa sach hai naal.
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the charity I beg for; contentment is my temple. The True Lord is always with me.
bhaykhee haath na laDhee-aa sabh baDhee jamkaal.
Nothing is obtained by wearing religious robes; all will be seized by the Messenger of Death.
naanak galaa jhoothee-aa sachaa naam samaal. ||1||
O Nanak, talk is false; contemplate the True Name. ||1||

In plain words

Suppose I wandered from door to door, begging, dressed in holy robes.

Robes and wandering alone would not make me ready to stand before the One.

So the Name is the gift I ask for, contentment is my temple, and the True One is always right here with me.

Nanak says: talk alone is empty; hold on to the True Name.

The truest temple is a contented heart, and the One is always inside it.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the Third Mehl. Outward religious display (robes, begging) accomplishes nothing by itself, and everything outward passes. What matters is the Name as one's true asking and contentment as one's true temple.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you feel most at peace, and could you carry that peace with you?
