ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥
salok mehlaa 1.
Shalok, First Mehl:
ਸਰਬੇ ਜੋਇ ਅਗਛਮੀ ਦੂਖੁ ਘਨੇਰੋ ਆਥਿ ॥
sarbay jo-ay agachhmee dookh ghanayro aath.
See the imperishable Lord everywhere; attachment to wealth brings only great pain.
ਕਾਲਰੁ ਲਾਦਸਿ ਸਰੁ ਲਾਘਣਉ ਲਾਭੁ ਨ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਾਥਿ ॥੧॥
kaalar laadas sar laaghana-o laabh na poonjee saath. ||1||
Loaded with dust, you have to cross over the world-ocean; you are not carrying the profit and capital of the Name with you. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Look out and see the One who never perishes, present in everything.
Loading your arms with dust, clinging to what passes, only makes the crossing heavy.
Carry instead the true wealth of the Name, and the journey grows light.
Fill your arms with the Name, not with dust that only weighs you down.
A shalok of the First Mehl. 'Dust' is attachment to wealth, dead weight for the crossing. The remedy is to carry the 'profit and capital of the Name', the one wealth that helps. The opening command is to see the imperishable One everywhere.
A Question to Sit With
What are you carrying that makes your days heavier than they need to be?
