The Inexhaustible Wealth of the True Name

ਮਃ ੧ ॥
mehlaa 1.
First Mehl:
ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਾਚਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੂ ਅਖੁਟਉ ਦਰਬੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
poonjee saacha-o naam too akhuta-o darab apaar.
My capital is Your True Name, O Lord; this wealth is inexhaustible and infinite.
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਖਰੁ ਨਿਰਮਲਉ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਾਹੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
naanak vakhar nirmalo Dhan saahu vaapaar. ||2||
O Nanak, this merchandise is immaculate; blessed is the banker who trades in it. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My whole fortune is Your True Name, and this wealth never runs out.

It cannot be spent to empty, cannot be lost, cannot be stained.

Nanak says: this treasure is pure, and lucky is the trader who deals in it.

The one wealth that can never run out is the Name held in the heart.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the First Mehl. Directly answering the previous verse: the Name is 'capital' that is inexhaustible and immaculate. The merchant/banker image (from a mercantile culture) praises the one who invests their life in this wealth.

A Question to Sit With

What is a kind of richness that cannot be used up?
