Forever and ever, he dwells in peace, and merges in the True Lord. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
In this world the saints gather a true wealth. They meet the One through the True Guru.
The Guru plants Truth inside them. No one can say how much this wealth is worth.
With this wealth, the deep hunger eases, and peace comes to live in the mind. Those for whom it was written from the start come and receive it.
A heart that goes its own way stays poor, crying out for more things. Day and night it wanders, and its hunger never leaves.
It never finds calm, and peace never settles in. It is always worried, and its doubts never go away.
Nanak says: without the True Guru, our thinking gets twisted. Meeting the Guru, we live by the Word.
Then we rest in peace forever and ever, and melt into the True One.
The truest wealth is the kind that finally lets your heart rest.
The deeper layer
Some people gather a wealth no money can buy, and it brings peace that lasts.
Santee dhan khati-aa means the saints earn this wealth. They get it by meeting the One through the True Guru, who plants Truth inside them. Is dhan kee keemat kahee na jaa-ay: no one can say what this wealth is worth. With it, the deep hunger stops, and peace moves into the mind.
Then the verse turns to the manmukh, a person who follows only their own mind. Such a person stays poor inside, always crying out for more. They wander day and night, hungry, worried and doubtful. Without the True Guru, our thinking gets twisted. Meeting the Guru, we live by the Word and rest in the True One forever.
Think of two kids at a sleepover. One keeps checking what everyone else has. The other is just happy to be there. The second one goes home full.
A Question to Sit With
What kind of richness eases the restlessness inside a person?
