Remembering the Giver, Not Only the Gift

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥
salok mehlaa 5.
Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਦੰਮਾ ਦੰਮ ॥
maa-i-aa manhu na veesrai maaNgai dammaa damm.
You do not forget Maya from your mind; you beg for it with each and every breath.
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹੀ ਕਰੰਮ ॥੧॥
so parabh chit na aavee naanak nahee karamm. ||1||
You do not even think of that God; O Nanak, it is not in your karma. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

It is easy to keep the shiny things of the world on your mind, asking for more with every breath.

But the Giver behind every gift can slip out of mind entirely.

Nanak says: turn back toward that One, for a life spent thinking only of the gifts forgets the hand that gives them.

Do not let the gifts make you forget the Giver.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the Fifth Mehl (Guru Arjan). Maya stays on the mind with every breath, while the Giver slips out of it. Remember the Giver along with the gift, and turn back with tenderness.

A Question to Sit With

When something good comes to you, do you remember to be grateful for where it came from?
