What Melts Away in the End

mehlaa 5.
Fifth Mehl:
sach jaanai kach vaidi-o too aaghoo aaghay salvay.
You believe what is false and temporary to be true, and so you run on and on.
naanak aatasrhee manjh nainoo bi-aa dhal paban ji-o jummi-o. ||2||
O Nanak, like butter in the fire, it shall melt away; it shall fade away like the water-lily. ||2||

In plain words

When you treat what is passing as if it will last forever, you keep chasing and chasing.

Nanak says: it slips away like butter in a warm pan, and fades like a flower on the water.

Do not build your whole life on things that melt away.
The deeper layer

Butter in fire and the water-lily are pictures of impermanence — soft, lovely, and gone. Enjoy them, and build your life on what stays.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you enjoy that does not last long?
