Eye make-up, garlands of flowers, and the flavor of betel leaf, are all nothing but dust, without seeing You. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I wake in the quiet hours before dawn, hoping to catch sight of You.

All the pretty things I could wear are just dust to me until I do.

The quiet before dawn is a good time to look for what matters most.
The deeper layer

Amrit vela, the still hours before dawn, is the classic time to turn inward. Eye-makeup, flower garlands, the taste of betel — the outer decorations mean nothing next to meeting the Beloved.

A Question to Sit With

What would you happily get up early for?
