ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਜਾ ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਹੈ ਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੈ ਕਾੜਾ ॥
har jee-o jaa too mayraa mitar hai taa ki-aa mai kaarhaa.
O Dear Lord, when You are my friend, what sorrow can afflict me?
ਜਿਨੀ ਠਗੀ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਆ ਸੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਨਿਵਾੜਾ ॥
jinee thagee jag thagi-aa say tuDh maar nivaarhaa.
You have beaten off and destroyed the cheats that cheat the world.
ਗੁਰਿ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਇਆ ਜਿਤਾ ਪਾਵਾੜਾ ॥
gur bha-ojal paar langhaa-i-aa jitaa paavaarhaa.
The Guru has carried me across the terrifying world-ocean, and I have won the battle.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਭਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਵਡਾ ਆਖਾੜਾ ॥
gurmatee sabh ras bhogdaa vadaa aakhaarhaa.
Through the Guru's Teachings, I enjoy all the pleasures in the great world-arena.
ਸਭਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀਆ ਵਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਦਿਤੀਓ ਸਤਵੰਤਾ ਸਾੜਾ ॥
sabh indree-aa vas kar ditee-o satvantaa saarhaa.
The True Lord has brought all my senses and organs under my control.
ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਈਅਨਿ ਤਿਤੈ ਲਗਦੀਆ ਨਹ ਖਿੰਜੋਤਾੜਾ ॥
jit laa-ee-an titai lagdee-aa nah khinjotaarhaa.
Wherever I join them, there they are joined; they do not struggle against me.
ਜੋ ਇਛੀ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਾੜਾ ॥
jo ichhee so fal paa-idaa gur andar vaarhaa.
I obtain the fruits of my desires; the Guru has directed me within.
ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤੁਠਾ ਭਾਇਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਵਸਦਾ ਨੇੜਾ ॥੧੦॥
gur naanak tuthaa bhaa-irahu har vasdaa nayrhaa. ||10||
When Guru Nanak is pleased, O Siblings of Destiny, the Lord is seen to be dwelling near at hand. ||10||

When You are my friend, what sorrow could get to me?
The Guru carried me across the stormy sea of the world, and the great battle is already won; every restless sense has settled, and works with me now instead of against me.
When Guru Nanak is pleased, the One feels near at hand.
The only battle worth winning is the quiet one inside you.
Maaroo's warrior language stays, and the whole battlefield turns inward. 'The cheats that cheat the world' are the inner pulls of ego and craving; the victory is over one's own restless mind, never over any person. The Guru is the boat across the world-ocean.
