Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 15
Verse 3 of 5

No Rank, No Status, and Fully Enough

ਨਾ ਮੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਪਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਮੈ ਥੇਹੁ ਨ ਥਾਉ ॥
naa mai jaat na pat hai naa mai thayhu na thaa-o.
I have no social status or honor; I have no place or home.
ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਟਿਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਆ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥੨॥
sabad bhayd bharam kati-aa gur naam dee-aa samjhaa-ay. ||2||
Pierced through by the Word of the Shabad, my doubts have been cut away. The Guru has inspired me to understand the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I may have no fancy rank, no status, no grand place to call my own.

And none of that matters, because the true Word has cut through my doubts.

The Guru placed the Naam in my heart, and that makes me fully at home.

Your worth does not come from rank or status; the heart is what makes you whole.
The deeper layer

One of Gurbani's dignity verses: naa mai jaat na pat, I have no caste, no status, turned from lack into freedom. What the world ranks by (caste, honor, property) is beside the point; the shabad cutting through doubt and the naam in the heart are what make a person whole.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a person valuable, if not their rank or status?
