Verse 3 of 5

Understanding That Comes as a Gift

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਇ ॥
gurmukh ayko jaanee-ai jaa satgur day-ay bujhaa-ay.
As Gurmukh, one comes to know the One Lord, when the True Guru instructs him.
ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿਦੂ ਏਹ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
so satgur salaahee-ai jidoo ayh sojhee paa-ay. ||2||
Praise the True Guru, who imparts this understanding. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Coming to know the One is something I cannot force by myself.

It arrives as understanding, gently given by the Guru.

So I praise the Guru, who opens my eyes and helps me see.

Real understanding often arrives as a gift, not a conquest.
The deeper layer

Boojhaa-ay, the True Guru makes one understand, frames insight as gift, not personal achievement. Knowing the One is received through the teaching (sojhee paa-ay). Gratitude toward the source of understanding replaces pride in one's own cleverness, a recurring note across Guru Amar Das's Maaroo shabads.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what has helped you understand something you could not see alone?
