Love Wells Up Through the Guru

har har aap milaa-ay gur mai dasay har Dhan raas.
O my Guru, please unite me with the Lord, Har, Har; show me the wealth, the capital of the Lord.
bin gur paraym na labh-ee jan vaykhhu man nirjaas.
Without the Guru, love does not well up; see this, and know it in your mind.
har gur vich aap rakhi-aa har maylay gur saabaas. ||2||
The Lord has installed Himself within the Guru; so praise the Guru, who unites us with the Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O Guru, join me to the One, and show me the true wealth.

Without the Guru, love does not well up - see it and know it in your mind. The One has placed Himself within the Guru, so I praise the Guru who unites us.

The Guru is where love learns to well up.
The deeper layer

Love for the One grows through the Guru.

The seeker asks the Teacher: please join me with the One, and show me the true wealth. Then the verse says, bin gur paraym na labh-ee: without the Teacher, love does not well up. The One has placed Himself inside the Teacher, har gur vich aap rakhi-aa. So praising the Teacher is praising the One who brings us together.

Think of a spring hidden under the ground. Someone who knows where to dig helps the water come up. The water was always there. The Teacher shows us where it is.

A Question to Sit With
