Verse 4 of 5

The Endless Thirst of Forgetting

manmukh tarisnaa bhar rahay man aasaa dah dis baho laakh.
The self-willed manmukhs are filled with hunger and thirst; their minds run around in the ten directions, hoping for great wealth.
bin naavai Dharig jeevday vich bistaa manmukh raakh.
Without the Name of the Lord, their life is cursed; the manmukhs are stuck in manure.
o-ay aavahi jaahi bhavaa-ee-ah baho jonee durganDh bhaakh. ||3||
They come and go, and are consigned to wander through uncounted incarnations, eating stinking rot. ||3||

In plain words

When a heart forgets the Name, it stays thirsty no matter how much it grabs, reaching in every direction and never filling up.

The way back is always open: turn toward the Name, and the thirst finally rests.

Grabbing more never fills the thirst; turning toward what is real does.
The deeper layer

A heart that forgets the Naam stays thirsty, however much it grabs.

Manmukh trisnaa bhar rahay — those who follow only their own wants are full of thirst. Man aasaa dah dis — their hopes run in ten directions at once. The ache is a thirst that grabbing never fills, and it ends the moment one turns back.

A Question to Sit With

When have you noticed that "more" did not satisfy you?
