The Whole Body Made Clean by the Name

Chanting the Lord's Name, they are all purified and sanctified.

When my Lord and Master is totally pleased, He leads the mortal to meditate in remembrance on the Lord, and then his filth is taken away. ||3||

In plain words

Speaking the Name makes the whole body pure and bright.

When my Master is pleased, remembering Him lifts every stain away.

Remembering what is good makes your whole self feel clean and bright.
The deeper layer

Saying the Name makes the whole person clean and bright.

The verse speaks plainly about the body. It says the body has nine openings, and that they are not clean. That is simply true of every body. It is not shameful.

Then the verse turns. Bol har naam pavitar sabh kitaa — speaking the Name makes it all pure. When the Master is pleased, har simrat mal leh jaavai — remembering the One takes away the dirt. Mal means dirt, and here it means the dirt on the heart.

Think of washing your hands after playing outside. Dirt is normal. Washing makes you fresh again. Remembering the One is like washing on the inside. Being clean is a gift that comes from remembering.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel fresh and clear again?
