The Boat Across the Rough Water

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
maa-i-aa moh bikham hai bhaaree.
Attachment to Maya is terribly treacherous.
ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ॥
ki-o taree-ai dutar sansaaree.
How can one cross over the difficult world-ocean?

satgur bohith day-ay parabh saachaa jap har har paar langhaavai jee-o. ||4||
The True Lord bestows the boat of the True Guru; meditating on the Lord, Har, Har, one is carried across. ||4||

In plain words

Getting pulled by wanting-more is a heavy, tricky current.

How do you cross such rough water? The true One gives the boat of the True Guru; holding the Naam, you are carried safely across.

You do not have to swim the rough water alone - there is a boat.
The deeper layer

Life can feel like rough water, but the One gives us a boat.

Maa-i-aa moh means clinging to money and things. The verse says it is bikham, hard and tricky, and very heavy. Ki-o taree-ai dutar sansaaree — how can anyone cross this rough sea of the world?

The answer comes as a picture. The True One gives the bohith, the boat, of the Satguru, the true Teacher. Saying the Name, one is carried across.

Think of a river too wide and fast to swim. You do not have to be the strongest swimmer. You just need to get into the boat and stay in it. The Guru is the boat, and holding the Name keeps you in it.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what feels like a steady boat when things get rough?
