Running After What Will Not Last

maaroo mehlaa 5.
Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
vit navit bharmi-o baho bhaatee anik jatan kar Dhaa-ay.
For the sake of riches, I wandered around in so many ways; I rushed around, making all sorts of efforts.
jo jo karam kee-ay ha-o ha-umai tay tay bha-ay ajaa-ay. ||1||
The deeds I did in egotism and pride, have all been done in vain. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

For the sake of riches I wandered every which way, rushing about, trying everything.

But the things I did just to puff myself up all came to nothing.

Anything done just to look big tends to add up to nothing.
The deeper layer

The chase after wealth leaves the heart wandering; deeds done in ego (haumai) come to nothing, an emptiness to set down.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever worked hard for something that did not matter as much as you thought?
