Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The love a servant feels for the One holds all the way to the end.

While I lived I served the One I love, and as I move on, I keep Him held in my heart.

Love for the One holds all the way through - even the last step.
The deeper layer

A true love for the One lasts all the way to the end, and beyond.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Sayvak kee orhak nibhee preet — the love of the One's servant holds all the way to the end.

The next line speaks of a whole life. Jeevat saahib sayvi-o apnaa — while living, I served my Master. Chaltay raakhi-o cheet — and as I leave, I keep the One in my heart.

Think of a grandparent who has loved the same garden for sixty years. They tend it every day, all their life. Even when they grow old, the love is still there. This verse sees the end of a life the same gentle way. It is not a break. The love just keeps going.

A Question to Sit With

What love in your life do you trust to last?
