Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 30
Verse 4 of 5

Sorrow and Joy Become the Same

ਆਗਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਭੂਖ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਿ ਸੂਖਾ ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਓ ॥
aagi-aa meh bhookh so-ee kar sookhaa sog harakh nahee jaani-o.
When I am under the Lord's Command, I find even hunger pleasurable; I know no difference between sorrow and joy.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਓ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਮਾਥੈ ਲੇ ਮਾਨਿਓ ॥੩॥
jo jo hukam bha-i-o saahib kaa so maathai lay maani-o. ||3||
Whatever the Command of my Lord and Master is, I bow my forehead and accept it. ||3||

In plain words

Resting in the flow, even hunger feels alright; I stop splitting the world into sorrow and joy.

Whatever comes from the One, I take it to my forehead and accept it.

When you rest in the flow, ups and downs stop tossing you around.
The deeper layer

When you rest in the One's will, the ups and downs of life stop throwing you around.

Aagi-aa meh bhookh so-ee kar sookhaa — living within the One's will, even hunger feels like comfort. Sog harakh nahee jaani-o — I stop dividing life into sorrow and joy. It means that even hard days feel bearable when the heart is steady.

Hukam means the will or command of the One. Jo jo hukam bha-i-o saahib kaa — whatever the Master's will is. So maathai lay maani-o — I bow my forehead and accept it.

This is not about giving up. It is about trust. Think of a sailor on a boat. The wind changes, and a good sailor does not shout at it. They shift the sail and keep going. Accepting the One's will works like that. It keeps you steady, whatever the weather.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay steady through both good days and hard ones?
