You are engrossed in sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment; you have turned your eyes away from the Truth.

sees uthaavan na kabhoo mil-ee mahaa dutar maa-ay. ||3||
You cannot even raise your head above the water of the vast, impassable sea of Maya. ||3||

In plain words

Wanting, anger, greed and clinging take hold of us. We turn our eyes away from the Truth.

Then we cannot even lift our heads above the deep water of the world's pull.

When you feel in over your head, gently turn your eyes back to the Truth.
The deeper layer

When strong feelings take over, we stop looking at the Truth.

The verse names four of them: kaam, strong wanting; krodh, anger; lobh, greed; and moh, clinging too tight. They turn our eyes away, naytar rakhay firaa-ay. Then we are in over our heads in maa-ay, the deep sea of the world's pull. We cannot even lift our heads above the water.

Think of a kid so hooked on a video game that they miss dinner, homework and a friend at the door. The way back is simple: gently turn the eyes back toward the One.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you turn your attention back to what matters?
