Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 49
Verse 2 of 5

A Priceless Jewel

ਲਾਲੁ ਅਮੋਲਾ ਲਾਲੋ ॥
laal amolaa laalo.
My Beloved is a priceless jewel.
ਅਗਹ ਅਤੋਲਾ ਨਾਮੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
agah atolaa naamo. ||1|| rahaa-o.
His Name is unattainable and immeasurable. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My Beloved is a jewel beyond any price.

The Naam is too deep to grasp and too great to weigh.

The Name can't be bought, only received.
The deeper layer

My Beloved is a jewel no money can buy.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad. Laal amolaa laalo — the Beloved is a laal, a precious red jewel, and amolaa, beyond any price.

Agah atolaa naamo — the Name is agah, too deep to grasp, and atolaa, too great to weigh. Think of trying to put the ocean on a kitchen scale. It will never fit. We cannot grab the Name or buy it. We can only receive it as a gift.

A Question to Sit With

What precious thing in your life could never be bought?
