Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 49
Verse 4 of 5

Awake Night and Day

ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਠਾਣਾ ॥
nihchal tin kaa thaanaa.
Permanent is the place of those
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਛਾਣਾ ॥
gur tay mahal pachhaanaa.
who, through the Guru, realize the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਜਾਗੇ ॥
an-din gur mil jaagay.
Meeting the Guru, they remain awake and aware night and day;
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੩॥
har kee sayvaa laagay. ||3||
they are committed to the Lord's service. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Their place is steady and unshaken, for through the Guru they have found the One's own home.

Day and night they stay awake and aware, glad to serve.

A steady heart stays awake and glad to serve.
The deeper layer

Those who find the One's home through the Guru stand on steady ground.

Nihchal tin kaa thaanaa — their place is nihchal, unshaken. Gur tay mahal pachhaanaa — through the Guru they recognize the mahal, the One's own home.

An-din gur mil jaagay — meeting the Guru, they stay awake day and night. Awake here means alert inside, noticing the One. Har kee sayvaa laagay — and they are glad to serve. Think of a lighthouse keeper who keeps the light shining for every ship.

A Question to Sit With

What keeps you awake and caring, day after day?
