The love of children and friends, and the pleasures of married life are torn apart. ||1||

In plain words

I have seen those who forgot the Naam turn to dust.

Everything we grip tightly, even the people and pleasures we love most, will one day change and pass. So hold what stays: the Naam.

Everything we grip will change and pass; hold what stays.
The deeper layer

Everything we grip tightly will one day change and pass.

Jinee naam visaari-aa — those who forgot the Naam. Say hot daykhay khayh — I have seen them become dust. Khayh means dust or ash. Think of a sandcastle at the beach. It can be beautiful, and the tide still comes.

Putar mitar bilaas banitaa — children, friends, comforts and a partner. Toottay ay nayh — these ties all come apart in time. That is a gentle reason to love people well today, and to hold the Naam, which stays.

A Question to Sit With

What is something lasting you want to hold onto?
