Take the Name Every Day

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਲੇਹ ॥
mayray man naam nit nit layh.
O my mind, continually, continuously chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਜਲਤ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰ ਸੂਖੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਦੇਹ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jalat naahee agan saagar sookh man tan dayh. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You shall not burn in the ocean of fire, and your mind and body shall be blessed with peace. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, say the Naam every single day.

Then the ocean of fire can't burn you, and peace fills your mind and body.

Take in the Naam daily, and the world's heat can't scorch you.
The deeper layer

Say the Naam every day, and peace fills mind and body.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line at the centre of the shabad. Mayray man naam nit nit layh — my mind, take the Naam day after day. Nit nit means always, every day.

Jalat naahee agan saagar — you will not burn in the agan saagar, the ocean of fire. That fire is the heat of wanting and worry that burns through the world. Sookh man tan dayh — peace comes to mind and body. Think of a swimmer who comes out of the hot sun into cool water. The heat is still out there, and the swimmer is cool.

A Question to Sit With

What is your daily habit that keeps you cool and steady?
