Like a Tree's Shade

ਬਿਰਖ ਛਾਇਆ ਜੈਸੇ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਪਵਨ ਝੂਲਤ ਮੇਹ ॥
birakh chhaa-i-aa jaisay binsat pavan jhoolat mayh.
Like the shade of a tree, these things shall pass away, like the clouds blown away by the wind.

har bhagat darirh mil saaDh naanak tayrai kaam aavat ayh. ||2||2||25||
Meeting with the Holy, devotional worship to the Lord is implanted within; O Nanak, only this shall work for you. ||2||2||25||

In plain words

The things we lean on are like the shade of a tree or clouds pushed along by the wind — here, then gone.

Meet the holy people and let love for the One take root. Nanak says, this is the one thing that will serve you.

Our supports are like passing shade; love for the One serves.
The deeper layer

Our supports pass like a tree's shade, and love for the One stays.

Birakh chhaa-i-aa jaisay binsat — these things pass away like the shade of a tree. Pavan jhoolat mayh — like clouds pushed along by the wind. Shade moves as the sun moves. Clouds drift off. Both are lovely while they last.

Har bhagat darirh mil saadh — meet the holy people, and let love for the One grow firm. Darirh means firm, rooted. Naanak tayrai kaam aavat ayh — Nanak says this is what will help you. Think of a tree's roots. You cannot see them, and they hold the tree up through every storm.

A Question to Sit With

What have you leaned on that turned out to be temporary?
