Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 57
Verse 2 of 4

Held in the Dark Before Birth

ਜਿਥੈ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਭੜਹਾਰੇ ॥
jithai agan bhakhai bharhhaaray.
In that place, where the fire rages like an oven,
ਊਰਧ ਮੁਖ ਮਹਾ ਗੁਬਾਰੇ ॥
ooraDh mukh mahaa gubaaray.
in that darkness where the body lies face down
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਸੋਈ ਓਥੈ ਖਸਮਿ ਛਡਾਇ ਲਇਆ ॥੨॥
saas saas samaalay so-ee othai khasam chhadaa-ay la-i-aa. ||2||
- there, one remembers his Lord and Master with each and every breath, and then he is rescued. ||2||

In plain words

Even in the deep, unknowing dark before I was born, I was not alone.

Breath by breath I remembered You there, and You kept me safe.

Even in the dark before birth, you were held and remembered.
The deeper layer

Even before we were born, in the deep dark, the One was keeping us safe.

The verse speaks of the time in the mother's womb. It pictures a hot, dark, tight place, where a baby lies upside down. Saas saas samaalay so-ee: there, with every breath, one remembers the Master. Khasam chhadaa-ay la-i-aa: and the Master brings that one out safely.

The tender point is simple. We were never alone, not even before our first day. Think of a seed under the soil in winter. It is dark down there, but the seed is not forgotten. The sun and rain are already on their way.

Breath by breath, we were held.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt held even in the dark?
