The One Help That Stays

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
maaroo mehlaa 5.
Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
ਵੈਦੋ ਨ ਵਾਈ ਭੈਣੋ ਨ ਭਾਈ ਏਕੋ ਸਹਾਈ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
vaido na vaa-ee bhaino na bhaa-ee ayko sahaa-ee raam hay. ||1||
The One Lord alone is our help and support; neither physician nor friend, nor sister nor brother can be this. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Doctors, friends, sisters, brothers — all of them help us in their season, and we are grateful.

But there is one Help that never has to leave: the One, always with us.

The One is the help that never has to leave.
The deeper layer

Many people help us in life. Vaido na vaa-ee bhaino na bhaa-ee names them: doctor, friend, sister, brother. Each helps in their own season, and we are thankful for them.

But ayko sahaa-ee raam: the One is the help that never has to leave. Think of the sun over a playground. Friends come and go, but the sun stays over all of it.

The verse has the hardest times in mind, even the end of life. It points to a steady, lasting Friend who is always there.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what is always there for you?
