Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 62
Verse 8 of 9

Only One Is the Giver

ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀਆ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਸੰਘਾਰਾ ॥
ras bhogan paatisaahee-aa dukh sukh sanghaaraa.
Enjoying princely pleasures, one shall be destroyed in pain and pleasure.
ਮੋਟਾ ਨਾਉ ਧਰਾਈਐ ਗਲਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
motaa naa-o Dharaa-ee-ai gal a-ugan bhaaraa.
Adopting a name of greatness, one strings heavy sins around his neck.
ਮਾਣਸ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੭॥
maanas daat na hova-ee too daataa saaraa. ||7||
Mankind cannot give gifts; You alone are the Giver of everything. ||7||

In plain words

Chasing after grand pleasures and big titles can leave a person tossed between highs and lows, weighed down.

No person can hand me what I most need. You alone are the Giver of everything, so it is to You that I turn.

No title or pleasure can give what the One Giver gives freely.
The deeper layer

Ras bhogan paatisaahee-aa means enjoying the pleasures of kings. Those pleasures swing a person between pain and joy. Motaa naa-o Dharaa-ee-ai: taking on a big, grand name. That hangs a heavy load of a-ugan, faults, around the neck. Think of a backpack full of trophies that gets heavier with every step.

Then the turn: maanas daat na hova-ee. No person can give the true gift. Too daataa saaraa: You, the One, are the Giver of everything.

The verse bows low, but not to put itself down. It is simply honest about where every true gift comes from.

A Question to Sit With
