Verse 9 of 9

A Door That Opens onto Freedom

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਅਵਿਗਤੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
agam agochar too Dhanee avigat apaaraa.
You are inaccessible and unfathomable; O Lord, You are imperishable and infinite.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਦਰੁ ਜੋਈਐ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
gur sabdee dar jo-ee-ai muktay bhandaaraa.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, seeking at the Lord's Door, one finds the treasure of liberation.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਸਾਚੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥੮॥੧॥
naanak mayl na chook-ee saachay vaapaaraa. ||8||1||
O Nanak, this union is not broken, if one deals in the merchandise of Truth. ||8||1||

In plain words

You are far beyond anything I can measure: endless, unbreakable, and forever.

Yet through the Guru's word, when I knock at Your door, it opens onto a treasure of freedom. Nanak says: once that bond is made, dealing only in what is true, it never comes undone.

The boundless One is still reachable through one open door: the Guru's word.
The deeper layer

A surprise at the end: the One is agam and agochar, out of reach and beyond seeing. The One is endless and never wears out.

Yet gur sabdee dar jo-ee-ai: through the Guru's word, we seek at the One's door. And there we find muktay bhandaaraa, a storehouse of freedom. It is like a mountain too big to climb, with a door at its foot that simply opens.

Nanak mayl na chook-ee: the mayl, the joining, never breaks for the one who trades in Truth.

A Question to Sit With

When has something huge and far-off suddenly felt close and reachable?
