Verse 9 of 9

What You Carry Onward

su-inaa rupaa sabh Dhaat hai maatee ral jaa-ee.
Gold and silver, and all metals, mix with dust in the end
bin naavai naal na chal-ee satgur boojh bujhaa-ee.
Without the Name, nothing goes along with you; the True Guru has imparted this understanding.
naanak naam ratay say nirmalay saachai rahay samaa-ee. ||8||5||
O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam are immaculate and pure; they remain merged in the Truth. ||8||5||

In plain words

Gold, silver, all the shiny things: in the end they mix back into the dust.

Without the Naam, nothing travels onward with me; the Guru has taught me this. Nanak says: hearts tuned to the Naam stay clear and clean, quietly merging into what is true.

Shiny things return to dust; the Name is what travels onward with you.
The deeper layer

All metals return to maatee, dust: wealth is impermanent. Bin naavai naal na chalee: only the Naam accompanies the soul onward. Naam rate se nirmalay: attuned hearts are pure. Death is a gentle onward journey.

A Question to Sit With

If you could carry only one thing forward, what would you want it to be?
