In the Sangat of Loving Hearts

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨ ਸਮਾਰਹੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਭਾਉ ਕਰੇ ॥
har simrahu gur bachan samaarahu sangat har jan bhaa-o karay.
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord; meditate and contemplate the Guru's Word, and love to associate with the humble servants of the Lord.
har jan gur parDhaan du-aarai naanak tin jan kee rayn haray. ||12||8||
The Lord's humble servants are the embodiment of the Guru; they are supreme and respected in the Court of the Lord. Nanak seeks the dust of the feet of those humble servants of the Lord. ||12||8||

In plain words

Hold the One in mind, turn the Guru's words over in your heart, and love being in the Sangat of the One's people.

The One's people show the Guru's way and are honored at the One's door. Nanak says, I ask for the dust of their feet.

Stay close to the Sangat, and let it lift you.
The deeper layer

Remember the One, and love the Sangat of the One's people.

Har simrahu — remember the One. Gur bachan samaarahu — hold the Guru's words close and think them over. Sangat har jan bhaa-o karay — love to be in the Sangat, people gathered together to remember the One.

Har jan gur parDhaan du-aarai — the One's people are honored at the door. And Nanak asks for tin jan kee rayn, the dust of their feet. It is a picture of deep respect, like bowing to someone whose kindness you admire.

Think of a choir. One voice alone can wobble. Standing among many voices, you find the note and hold it.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people whose goodness makes you want to be better?
