Silk Sheets Cannot Warm a Forgetful Heart

ਲੇਫੁ ਨਿਹਾਲੀ ਪਟ ਕੀ ਕਾਪੜੁ ਅੰਗਿ ਬਣਾਇ ॥

Their blankets and mattresses are made of silk, and so are the clothes on their bodies.

pir mutee dohaaganee tin dukhee rain vihaa-ay. ||4||
The Lord rejects the impure soul-brides. Their life-night passes in misery. ||4||

In plain words

You can have silk blankets and the softest clothes, and still feel cold inside.

When the heart forgets the One it loves, even a soft bed feels restless. The warmth I am after lives inside, not in the blankets.

Comfort on the outside means little when the heart forgets its love.
The deeper layer

Outer comfort cannot fill an empty heart.

Layf nihaalee pat kee kaaparh — blankets, mattresses and clothes, all made of silk. Everything soft and fine is there.

Yet the heart that has forgotten the Beloved spends the night restless: tin dukhee rain vihaa-ay. The night here also stands for a whole life. Warmth comes from remembered love, and possessions cannot supply it.

Think of a cozy room on a night when you have argued with someone you love. The heater is on, and you still feel cold.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever had everything comfortable around you and still felt something missing?
