So Many Flavors, and Still I Miss the One

ਕਿਤੀ ਚਖਉ ਸਾਡੜੇ ਕਿਤੀ ਵੇਸ ਕਰੇਉ ॥
kitee chakha-o saadrhay kitee vays karay-o.
I have tasted many flavors, and worn many robes,
ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਗਇਅਮੁ ਵਾਢੀ ਝੂਰੇਦੀ ਝੂਰੇਉ ॥੫॥
pir bin joban baad ga-i-am vaadhee jhooraydee jhooray-o. ||5||
but without my Husband Lord, my youth is slipping away uselessly; I am separated from Him, and I cry out in pain. ||5||

In plain words

I have tasted every flavor and worn every fine robe.

Yet without the One I love, all that shine feels thin, and my days slip past. What I long for is the Beloved.

Every flavor in the world is thin next to the one love the heart wants.
The deeper layer

Every taste and every fine robe feels thin next to the one love the heart wants.

Kitee chakha-o saadrhay kitee vays karay-o — so many tastes sampled, so many robes tried on — and still the heart is vaadhee, apart. The passing of joban (youth) is named honestly, and held as longing rather than despair.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you enjoy that is fun for a while but does not fill you up for long?
