Truth is like a gentle ointment for the eyes. Rub it in, and you begin to see the One who has been watching over you all along.
When you turn to the Guru, understanding grows, and the loud voice of ego and pride grows quiet.
Truth is an ointment for the eyes that lets you see what was always there.
Anjan is the kohl or ointment applied to the eyes; here it is sach kaa, made of Truth, and it lets the gi-aanee (the one with inner sight) see the daykhanhaar, the great Seer. The Gurmukh — the one who turns to the Guru — comes to know, and ha-umai garab (ego and pride) are gently subdued. Ego lifts like a fog.
A Question to Sit With
When has understanding something clearly made a worry or a boast just quietly fall away?
