ayhu sabad saar jis no laa-ay.
One who is committed to this most sublime Shabad
gurmukh tarisnaa bhukh gavaa-ay.
becomes Gurmukh, and is rid of thirst and hunger.
aapan lee-aa kichhoo na paa-ee-ai kar kirpaa kal Dhaaree jee-o. ||5||
By one's own efforts, nothing can be accomplished; the Lord, in His Mercy, bestows power. ||5||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Hold this teaching close, and the endless thirst and hunger for more finally settle.
We cannot force our way to this by ourselves. It comes as a gift, when grace quietly gives us the strength.
The deep thirst settles by grace, given freely.
Ayhu sabad saar — this teaching is the essence — and whoever it is applied to has trisnaa bhukh gavaa-ay, thirst and hunger stilled. Then the key line: aapan lee-aa kichhoo na paa-ee-ai — nothing is gained by our own grabbing; it is kar kirpaa, by mercy, that the One kal dhaaree, bestows the strength. We come to grace with open, empty hands.
A Question to Sit With
What is something you cannot get by trying harder, only by letting it come?
