Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Family, home, and all our things are easy to love — and easy to get tangled up in.
You can hold them dearly and still keep your heart free, remembering the One who gave them.
Love your family, but don't get knotted up.
Putar kaltar garih daykh samagree — looking at children, spouse, home and belongings. Is hee meh urjhaa-i-o — you get tangled up in them. The verse does not ask anyone to stop loving. The Sikh way is a householder's way: living fully with family and work.
The point is to love without clinging. Think of holding a bird in an open hand. You cherish it, but you do not squeeze. And you remember the Giver behind every gift.
How can you love your family and your things dearly without letting worry about them tie you in knots?
